Mythic Physique: Tributes

Mythic Mentor A: 2016

I actually know very little about Alan Steel. He was born Sergio Ciani in 1935 and started his Herculean career as Steve Reeves' body double in Hercules Unchained. Alan went on to star in several other Hercules films, this time in the titular role. He resumed the part once again in a comedic re-dub of one of these films.

During the Sword & Sandal Era, he also portrayed Samson and several other epic heroes. Alan was a stuntman, as well as an actor and bodybuilder. He retired from the limelight in the 1970s, when his cinematic niche had all but evaporated.

I was questing for contact information in 2015, as I wished to personally thank him for inspiring me, and perhaps interview him for Mythic Physique. Alas, Alan Steel died two days before his eightieth birthday on September fifth.

Alan Steel brought a lightness, a happy-go-lucky attitude to his portrayals of Hercules that impressed me greatly as a youth. This dimension of my mythic ancestor still appeals to me, and I tend to view of Alan's films more often than others whenever I work out.

Thank you Alan Steel, wherever you may now be! Your unique portrayal of my operant archetype has inspired me for over half a century. It will, no doubt, continue to inspire me for the rest of my earthly sojourn. For that, I now express my sincere gratitude!
