Why This is So Important:

I have Type II Diabetes. It was diagnosed after I lost a phenomenal amount of weight in a relatively short period of time, experienced intense chills after consuming each and every meal, and fell down flights of stairs a couple of times (yes, it took all this to get me to see a doctor).

Although I was not consistently 'eating right' at the time, I was faithfully experimenting with some pre-steroid era bodybuilding diets and routines and lifting fairly heavy weights in my home gym. My muscles were getting huge and I felt fine,

Initially I saw the weight loss as a good thing, as 'proof' that the old systems worked, rather than a warning. This process became a living nightmare when I found myself swiftly getting thin and weak. In time I was unable to lift even the lightest weight and all my massive muscles had all but vanished.

Some of the diets from the dawn of Physical Culture involved eating large amounts of 'natural' sugars found in 'healthy' foods. Though many people can process and gain energy from simple carbohydrates, alas I am no longer one of them.

Once diagnosed, I immediately sought ways to regain lost ground and get back on track. After much research on the subject, I experimented with a high fat, high protein, low carb diet and found that it worked - for me. After about a year, I was off the medications, my blood sugar was in the high-normal range, and I found that if I stuck with eating a limited, but very wide, choice of foods, my weight normalized in a range that was not only acceptable but optimal for attaining my personal fitness goals.

To get back my Quest for a Mythic Physique I started with the trusty Charles Atlas ® course, which has served me well since childhood. It requires no weights and no equipment beyond the occasional piece of furniture. Having re-established my foundation on solid ground, I slowly added dumbells, kettlebells, grips, bands, coils, cables, indian clubs and other equipment to my routines.

Once a year, sometime twice, I reaffirm my commitment to the Path of Optimal Wellness and the Mythic Physique by completing the entire Charles Atlas ® course, and fine-tuning my diet. This practice helps to remind me of what happened and what I learned.

Here is the important lesson: Though this now works for me, quite powerfully, and I am enthused about sharing it, it may not work for you. By Zeus' Beard, it may not even work for me somewhere down the road.

Please learn from my mistakes as well as my triumphs, I certainly try to.
