Mythic Physique: Book Reviews

The Production of Muscular Bulk by Michael J. Salvati was originally published in 1965 as a series of articles in the pages of IRONMAN magazine. It is potent wisdom, highly concentrated, and was way ahead of its time.

Salvati starts with the basics, defining the terms he is using and strengthening his points with helpful charts. Macro and micro nutrients are evaluated, as are various dietary and workout practices.

As we're informed from the get-go: diet and exercise are the two major factors in producing muscular bulk, so these remain his constant focus.

Recommendations are made throughout for maximizing the gains of strength athletes. MJS' conclusions, resting on the firm foundations of his own experimentation, are supported by the experiences of other successful strongman legends such as Paul Andersen and Bill Pearl.

High protein consumption and the eating of many small meals throughout the day are already ingrained practices in my regimen, as is ensuring adequate hydration. Sold by Salvati's logic I'm currently raising my caloric intake (which sounds counterproductive if you're trying to get rid of a spare tire, which I still am) with good result - my pants are all loose and I need a new belt.

I discovered the wonders of isometrics on my own, but Salvati has pointed me in bold new directions that will keep me busy for many a month. And my next training cycle will incorporate several of his suggested mass-building techniques.

What I appreciate most is Salvati's meticulous thoroughness and his integrity as an author. Rather than offer yet another new miracle-system, he shares his well supported findings and offers various mass building techniques that the reader can experiment with. Nothing works for everyone all the time, but there is enough knowledge and technique offered here to benefit anyone who wants to grow bigger and stronger.

The tome ends with a discussion of androgenics, a recipe for the author's X-Plus super-shake and two sample bulk gaining diets.

Though slim, The Production of Muscular Bulk is very meaty. After several re-readings I'm still feasting on, chewing and digesting the nutrient-rich information contained therein. This definitely isn't one of these books you read, then put on the shelf to gather dust. This is a practical tool as viable as your weights in building a massive physique. And as with the weights, mastery - and all the ensuing benefits - comes only with constant usage and frequent adjustment.
